Chad Moss ’94 to be recognized as Alumnus of the Year at sixteenth annual Torch Awards Gala

Each spring, the Alumni Association recognizes an outstanding graduate as Alumnus of the Year. This prestigious award is presented to a previous Torch Award winner who has made meaningful contributions to their profession and the community while showing a long-term commitment of time, talent and treasure to FIU.

This year, we are thrilled to celebrate Chad Moss ’94 at our Torch Awards Gala for his outstanding leadership and efforts to advance sustainability and education. Chad’s steadfast commitment to FIU and our Miami community is unparalleled; he truly embodies our university’s core values of truth, freedom, respect, responsibility and excellence.

Chad earned a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management from FIU in 1994. As executive vice president of Moss and Associates, one of Florida’s largest private construction management companies, Chad manages multiple accounts, client strategy and business development, public relations and community initiatives, while pursuing new projects. He has played an active role in some of the company’s most prominent projects including the Miami Marlins Park, opened in 2012, and the innovative 620-bed Parkview Hall at FIU’s MMC campus opened in August 2013.

As an emerging leader in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified projects, Chad has been recognized by his industry for excellence in his craft and advocates for better building and sustainability. Chad’s passion reaches beyond South Florida’s construction industry – he is dedicated to helping students and young adults realize their potential, instilling hope and creating countless opportunities in our community.

Chad believes in education and invests in lives. He is deeply involved with FIU’s Fostering Panther Pride, a program that supports former foster care and homeless students as they transition to life at FIU. Chad serves as a mentor and pledged a gift of $50,000, which will be matched by the state for a total impact of $100,000. His company, Moss Construction partnered with FIU to further support the initiative.

A champion of FIU, Chad and his family made a $250,000 donation to the university in 2013 to build the innovative, hi-tech construction laboratory, named the Moss and Associates Built Environment Informatics Laboratory (BEIL). Over the past decade, the school has become one of the top undergraduate construction education programs in the country, and Chad has played a key role in that success. He regularly speaks to classes and mentors students in business, engineering and real estate programs. Moss and Associates has hired over 35 FIU graduates, with 21 alumni currently employed.

Chad also serves as vice chair of the Broward County nonprofit Helping Abused, Neglected and Disadvantaged Youth (HANDY), which provides comprehensive programs focusing on education, youth development and economic self-sufficiency for more than 1,300 at-risk children. Chad has been named a “HANDY Hero,” and has created a scholarship to help graduates of the program attend FIU.

As a devoted FIU alumnus and influential community member, Chad’s engagement, enthusiasm and philanthropic spirit are an inspiration to us all. Chad reminds us that the efforts of just one person can inspire a lifetime of change.
