City Challenge Race is the fastest growing urban obstacle race series in the country. With events in New Jersey, New York and Miami, City Challenge is uniting communities by encouraging active and healthy lifestyles through mental and physical challenges.
On October 4, the MEN’S FITNESS City Challenge Race is coming to Miami and it will transform Sun Life Stadium into an exciting obstacle course with over 25 urban obstacles and challenges spread out over a three mile course. The Miami City Challenge Race 2015 is supporting The Wounded Warrior project and 100% of donations will do directly to this charity.
Elvi Guzman ’10, FIU alumnus and CEO of City Challenge Obstacle Race, took the time to answer some questions for the FIU Alumni Association about his FIU experience and starting City Challenge Race:
Tell us why FIU is important to you:
Thanks to FIU, its faculty, and its Worlds Ahead approach to education, I have been able to succeed in business. FIU provides the tools I need to reach my goals in corporate America and in my own business. Post-graduation I have been able to network with hundreds of alumni in the northeast and all over the country. It seems that everywhere I go there are Panthers I can connect with!
Tell us about your favorite memory at FIU:
Attending football games back in 2005! The roar of the crowd and the FIU Panther family in the stands was adrenaline-charged! I love the community atmosphere that FIU campus life exhibits!
What motivated you to start City Challenge Race?
Starting my own business has given me the opportunity to put all of the tools FIU provided me [to use]. Since I have always been passionate about fitness, establishing an event that promotes health and fitness was a dream come true. Allowing our athletes to overcome obstacles that simulate life and watching them cross the finish line is an amazing feeling. We raise funds for various charities: Wounded Warrior Project, Susan G Komen, Hoboken Shelter, Hoboken Department of Recreation, Charity Water, Jersey City Youth Foundation, and others. Being able to have the opportunity to help these great causes is very rewarding to both me and our office.
