An Introduction to Specialty Coffee

Miami is a revolutionary city, always on the forefront of fashion, design, art and music.  We are constantly trying to stay on top of current trends and thinking out of the box to create new ones. Yet for some reason this sort of tendency hasn’t translated to the city’s coffee offerings. Having such a diverse Latino population, we wonder why Cuban coffee seems to be all that we have to offer. One could definitely argue that Cuban coffee is a taste preference, or in a sense, a humbling backyard tradition.

Regardless of your background, if you were born in Miami, or lived in the U.S. long enough, you’ve grown accustomed to wanting more and trying the next best thing. While South Florida hasn’t led the new wave of specialty coffee we are seeing in California, New York, and across the country, it can still join the trend. What’s more exciting is that we know that Miami will manage to do so in its own unique way. Bright lights, art deco architecture, palm trees, and Hispanic influence – Miami rarely blends in – which is what makes us so excited about the potential this city has within the specialty coffee world.

We’ve decided to do our part. A couple years ago, Relentless Roasters was launched by several FIU alumni. We started off by roasting coffee in Daniel’s (founder and head roaster) backyard. Now, we have our own roasting facility in Kendall, supply coffee to some of Miami’s best cafes and restaurants, and have perfected our process in sourcing only the best coffee in the world. We do it all directly with the farms, no brokers or middlemen. We know exactly where the coffee came from and have real relationships with the people handling it.

We’re hoping to contribute here more on FIU’s alumni blog and discuss things such as: how coffee is sourced, the difference between fair trade and direct trade, the variety of brewing methods, and the ongoing story of Relentless Roasters.

Our hope is that you think deeper about coffee, and that we can play a role in that process. Relentless Roasters is planning an open tasting session, and are extending an invitation to all who would like to hang out, taste great coffee, and learn. We’re especially proud to be announcing this here, FIU’s alumni blog, as we are all proud alumni ourselves. Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions and follow us for updates!
