Dr. Stephen (Steve) M. Fain has been a member of the Florida International University Faculty since 1971, one year before the opening of the University. As a member of the College of Education he served in various roles including Associate Dean, Chair of the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. He founded and directed the Ed.D. Program in Curriculum & Instruction: Instructional Leadership and created and directed a doctoral program in Taiwan. Active in University affairs from the very beginning, he served on the Faculty Senate for 10 years and holding the position of Chair for four years. From 1978 through 1979 he served as the Director of FIU’s first self-study for accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He is the founder of FIU’s Institute of Jewish Studies (1985) and served as its Director for five years. In 2006 Steve was named Professor Emeritus. Over the years he has taught, lectured and consulted in the Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Israel, Peru, Taiwan, Uruguay and across the United States.
Dr. Fain served for 12 years as the FIU Faculty Athletics Representative to the NCAA. In 2002 he was recognized as a “Founding Professor.” That same year he joined the Faculty of the Honors College as a Fellow and in 2011 he was named Faculty Fellow Emeritus. In 1986 he was presented with the Gregory B. Wolfe Award as the outstanding member of the faculty by the Florida International University Student Government Association. He is a recipient of the University’s Outstanding Service Award (1998) and Distinguished Service Medal (2004), the Outstanding Faculty Torch Award (2005) and in 2012 he was inducted into the Order of the Torch, the honorary leadership society of FIU. In 2011 Steve co-conceptualized and co-founded the successful Faculty & Staff IgniteCampaign which won the CASE 2018 Grand Award for Overall Annual Fund Program. He has served as the Chair of the Ignite Campaign since its inception.
