Beatriz “Betty” Newborn
Manager, Parent & Student Philanthropy
Office: Alumni Relations & Annual Giving
Beatriz Newborn joined the FIU Alumni Relations & Annual Giving team in the fall of 2014. She currently serves as the Manager for Parent & Student Philanthropy. Betty, as she’s casually known, works to connect FIU students with FIU alumni. Her responsibilities include managing, developing and recruiting our FIU Student Ambassadors. Additionally, she focuses on collaborating with departments and student organizations throughout the university to bring philanthropic education and fundraising to their programming. She oversees the Parent’s Council, whose mission is to engage and recruit other FIU parents to support university initiatives through philanthropic giving.
Betty started her professional career in higher education at St. John’s University and later served as Director for Community Service at Saint Peter’s University in Jersey City, NJ. She served as Special Events Manager for the American Cancer Society, where she helped raise 1.5 million dollars towards the fight against cancer before transitioning back to higher education in 2012.
Betty attended FIU and was involved as a sister of Delta Phi Epsilon, a member of SGA and a founding member of Dance Marathon. She transferred to and graduated from St. John’s University in New York, with a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Arts and a Master’s degree in Student Development and Higher Education. She returned to Miami in 2010, where she currently resides with her husband, Ed, their son Eddy and their two-shitzu dogs, Charlie & Buster. On weekends, you may find her crafting, networking or being a tourist in her own city.
