Construction on new football stadium underway
Watch out South Florida – FIU has a new attraction that is sure to make some universities green with envy.
The soon-to-be-completed football stadium has been officially crowned the future “heart” of the university by students, alumni, faculty and staff alike. Making it the only on-campus stadium south of Orlando, it is set to open on Sept. 20, when the Golden Panthers play their first home game of the season against South Florida.
The $50 million football stadium will initially seat 20,000 and will eventually seat up to 45,000 with an enclosed upper deck. Once completed, there will be 1,400 club seats, approximately 50 club suites and a Panther Club on the first floor for club-seat owners.
In addition, FIU’s Student Services Support Center and Welcome Center will be embedded into the north side of the stadium due to be completed in 2011.
There are also preliminary discussions about building an Alumni Center on the east side of the stadium. With more than 120,000 alumni in South Florida alone, the Alumni Center would be an excellent addition to our community.
“As a proud FIU alumna, it excites me to see great progress on campus,” said U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. “This new stadium is a wonderful example of the growth and expansion of all of our programs, both academic and athletic.”

Celebrate today with Grad Bash
Grad Bash celebrates Golden Panthers’ successful graduation from FIU as a final farewell and first welcome to future Alumni Association members.
The end of each Fall and Spring semesters marks a special event in which students are congratulated for achieving their goals as members of the FIU family. Students are invited to attend our big white tent just outside the Pharmed Arena at University Park following the Commencement ceremonies.
This event is free and open to all Golden Panthers and their families, as it includes musical entertainment with a live DJ, carnival-style food and refreshments and free giveaways. Roary, the school mascot makes an appearance and takes photos with guest. The bookstore along with other merchants sell FIU memorabilia such as T-shirts, mugs, hats and more, and graduating students have the opportunity to buy class rings and diploma frames.
Remember to “Save the Date” for the next Grad Bash ceremony scheduled for April 28-29, 2008.
Two mentoring programs now accepting applications
The Alumni Association is proud to present two new mentoring programs that will benefit both alumni and current FIU students.
The first of the two, Dinner with 12 Strangers, gives alumni the opportunity to host a dinner, along with a faculty member, for 12 Golden Panthers. This program aims to create an informal environment for alumni to make new friends and establish connections with students and faculty members.
Here is how it works: Alumni host dinners in their homes for 12 students, faculty, and other alumni. Dinners can range from a catered affair to a backyard barbecue. A member of the Alumni Association staff will help the hosts make the invitation arrangements.
If you are interested in hosting a dinner, call 305-348-3334 or click here to fill out the registration.
On a similar note, the Alumni Mentoring Program is a voluntary program that allows current students to make immediate connections with alumni who have similar academic/career goals in mind.
Mentors will provide personal support and academic guidance through frequent contact in person, by phone, e-mail or other social events to name a few.
If you are interested in applying for the Alumni Mentoring Program, fill out the Student application or a Mentor application online. For more information, call 305-348-3334 or e-mail alumni@fiu.edu.
Be part of FIU Alumni Day Program
The FIU Alumni Day Program was designed to promote awareness and relationship-building among our alumni working in the local community.
The Alumni Association has learned that more than 75,000 of FIU alumni remain in South Florida (Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties). Therefore, many of our alumni are working in every capacity across a broad range of industries.
If you work in an organization that has a sizable representation of FIU alumni and are interested in learning how your organization can get involved, contact Jennifer Restrepo at 305-348-0159 or restrepj@fiu.edu.
Upcoming FIU Alumni Day events include a breakfast hosted by Odebrecht Construction & Engineering on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 8:30 a.m. at the north side of the new FIU Football Stadium.
All Engineering alumni and current students interested in obtaining an internship with this company are invited to attend.
To RSVP, by Friday, Feb. 15, e-mail fiualumnievents@hotmail.com.
