Grad Send-Off event wins national CASE Award

Graduating FIU students gather at the 2006 Grad Send-Off event held at the UP Bookstore

FIU’s Commencement Grad Send-Off event received national recognition from the Council for Advancement and the Support of Education (CASE), earning a bronze medal in the Alumni Relations Programs category. Sixty-four entries were judged in this competition and one overall grand gold medal, two gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medals were awarded.

“This is an honor and true reflection of all the hard work we do in Advancement and Alumni Relations,” said Assistant Executive Director Duane Wiles.

Grad Send-Off was organized by Wiles, Jim Brogran and A. Phredd Hunter, general and assistant general managers of the University Park Bookstore, respectively. FIU’s official Commencement Committee provided additional support and guidance.

At Grad Send-Off, students can take care of all their graduation needs, from purchasing their regalia to picking up their commencement tickets. The primary goal of the event is to prepare students ahead of time and provide a high quality one stop shopping experience that’s convenient and fun.

More than 3,000 students attended our 2005-‘06 Grad Send-Off event. For more information, visit www.fiualumni.com.

FIU graduates latest crop of lawyers

FIU’s third class of lawyers received degrees in a ceremony featuring keynote speaker Adalberto Jordan, U.S. District Court judge for the Southern District of Florida, on May 20, at University Park.

“In this group we have mothers and fathers, young people and students who later in life decided a career in law was their true calling, but above all we have a group who I am confident will bring honor to our profession,” said College of Law Dean Leonard Strickman. “Our graduates continue to set the bar higher for those who follow them.”

Earlier this year, FIU law students led the state in passing rates for the Florida Bar Exam; more than 94 percent of Golden Panthers who took the exam passed. Last year, FIU’s program was accredited in the fastest possible time by the American Bar Association.

Strickman says this class is not only outstanding academically, but also one of the most diverse in the entire country, with 55 percent minority students.

Civil and Environmental Engineering Second Alumni Reunion and Banquet

CEE alumni enjoyed the Second Alumni Reunion and Banquet

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering held its Second Alumni Reunion and Banquet on April 7. Department Chairperson Amir Mirmiran opened the event, followed by welcoming remarks from Associate Dean David Shen. Several attendees walked away with raffled FIU gear items provided by the FIU Alumni Association.

Mirmiran provided an overview of the state of the department and last year’s accomplishments. He also highlighted the importance of creating an Alumni Chapter in order to maintain a strong relationship between the department and its alumni. He encouraged attendees to form a chapter and make the Alumni Reunion and Banquet a yearly tradition, in addition to organizing other events.

This year’s distinguished alumni speaker was Javier Rodriguez ‘90, MDX executive director. Before his tenure at MDX, Rodriguez was the district director of transportation development at FDOT for 16 years. He was named the 2005 Engineer of the Year by the Cuban-American Association of Civil Engineers.

Assistant Executive Director Duane Wiles spoke about the requirements for the creation of an Alumni Chapter and offered the FIU Alumni Association’s assistance in the creation of a chapter.
