Golden Panthers succeed in international track and field competitions
Several current and former FIU track & field standouts are succeeding in international competition this summer.
Former FIU All-American Sheri-Ann Brooks, who picked up the university's first individual NCAA championship with the 200-meter title this past June, continues her march toward August's IAAF World Championships. She was one of four Golden Panthers to compete at the XX Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Senior Championships at Thomas Robinson National Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas, earlier this month.
Brooks placed fourth in the 200 meters in 22.99 seconds and ran the second leg on Jamaica's winning 4x100-meter relay that finished in 43.21 seconds at the CAC Championships. She is expected to compete in both the 200 and 4x100 at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics to be held in Helsinki, Finland, this month.
Former Golden Panther sprinter Kevon Pierre ‘05 also continues to successfully represent his native Trinidad & Tobago on the track. He ran the first leg of the nation's 4x100-meter relay in the preliminary round at the CAC Championships, helping the relay turn in the round's top qualifying time of 39.04 seconds.
Pierre will be competing in the 200 meters and as part of Trinidad & Tobago's 4x100-meter relay at August's World Championships.
Former standout Linda Louissaint ‘05 competed in three events for her native Haiti, placing sixth in the triple jump (12.83 meters/42 feet, 1.25 inches), 10th in the high jump (1.75 meters/5 feet, 8.75 inches) and 11th in the long jump (5.81 meters/19 feet, 0.75 inches).
Rising FIU junior Ronald Forbes competed in both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles at the CAC Championships for the Cayman Islands, placing 11th in the 110 hurdles in 14.49 seconds.
Rising Golden Panther senior Michael Letterlough medaled in two events at the NatWest Island Games in the Shetland Islands in July. He was a silver medalist in the hammer throw with a 159-foot, 4.5-inch (48.59 meters) performance and a bronze medalist in the discus with a throw of 140 feet, 7 inches (42.85 meters).
