Former soccer players named major league All Stars
Former FIU men's soccer standouts Tyrone Marshall, Steve Ralston and Greg Vanney were named 2005 All Stars by Major League Soccer (MLS).
Both Marshall and Vanney made their second MLS All-Star appearances on Saturday, July 30, at the 2005 Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game versus Fulham FC at Columbus Crew Stadium.
Vanney, who played for the Golden Panthers in 1992, signed with FC Dallas earlier this year to mark his return to MLS after four seasons with FC Bastia in France. The defender previously played six seasons (1996-2001) with the L.A. Galaxy. A mainstay in the back for FC Dallas with 14 starts, Vanney has been a member of the U.S. National Team since 1996 and played with the winning U.S. squad at the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Marshall, an FIU forward from 1996-97, has been a defensive force for the L.A. Galaxy since 2002 and was recently a Best XI honorable mention selection at the CONCACAF Gold Cup where he played for his native Jamaican National Team. Previously an MLS All Star in 2003, Marshall also played professionally for the Miami Fusion from 1998-2001.
Ralston, a two-time All American while at FIU from 1993-95, picks up his fifth MLS All Star honors. Recovering from a concussion sustained while playing for the winning U.S. National Team at the CONCACAF Gold Cup, Ralston did not play in the All Star Game, but has played more minutes than any other MLS player. A midfielder/defender for the New England Revolution since 2002, Ralston was the league's first player to reach 15,000 minutes and is MLS' all-time leader in minutes played, games played and games started. A second round pick by Tampa Bay in the 1996 MLS College Draft, Ralston was the league's first-ever Rookie of the Year.
