FIU's "Alumni Mentoring" Program is one in which students are matched with FIU alumni who have similar academic/career aspirations as well as personal interests and hobbies. These "alumni mentors" will provide personal support and academic guidance through frequent contact (in person, email, phone, snail mail, lunch or dinner, at FIU cultural events, and other social events) with the student.

This a voluntary program, provided as an opportunity for students to make immediate connections with alumni who have graduated from FIU's academic and student life programs. After initial discussion between the student and the mentor, each pair will decide whether or not to continue the "Alumni Mentoring" relationship.

Mentors and students will also be provided via email with lists of websites that offer interesting activities to do with a friend or mentor in the South Florida area.

At the end of the year, mentors and students will participate in a web-based "Alumni Mentoring" survey to assess the program in its first year.

If you are interested in applying for the "Alumni Mentoring" Program at FIU for 2004-2005, then complete the Student application or a Mentor application online. For additional information about FIU's "Alumni Mentoring" Program, please email alumni@fiu.edu or call 305-348-3334.

MENTORING DIRECTORY

This is a very important program because it fills a great need as expressed by students. In order for it to work we need many volunteers.

How does it work?
Students are often interested in speaking to alumni about a specific interest. For example, a student may come to the alumni office wanting to speak to alumni who are working in finance in New York City . We would then perform a search of our Mentor Directory for all mentors who fit these criteria, and give the contact information (phone number, e-mail address) to the student. The student can then contacts the mentors to ask his/her questions.

What's my commitment?
Minimal. You agree to have your name in the Directory and occasionally answer questions from a student who may contact you. There is a general fear that one will be inundated with calls through this program. In fact the opposite is true. You will probably find that you get just a few calls.

E-MENTORING

How does it work?
Mentoring by e-mail. A student is matched with a mentor working in a field of interest to the student and the two maintain a correspondence by e-mail over the course of one school year.

What's my commitment?
Minimal. You exchange periodic e-mail correspondence over the course of one school year (September - April).

JOB SHADOWING

How does it work?
A student is matched with a mentor who works in the field or at a company of interest to the student, and a day is arranged when the student shadows the mentor on-the-job for a morning, an afternoon, or the whole day. This gives the student a glimpse into the practical aspects of work in a particular field at a particular company.

What's my commitment?
Your willingness to have a student (or possibly two) shadow you at work for either a half-day or whole day.

ON CAMPUS CAREER SESSIONS

How does it work?
Occasionally we organize events where we ask alumni to come to campus to speak with students. This may be on a particular topic (i.e. your field of expertise) or it may be that alumni from a particular faculty or department are asked to speak to undergraduate students in that faculty or department about their work experience.

What's my commitment?
A few hours of your time to come to campus on a particular day.
