Florida International University's 90,000-plus alumni have risen to prominence in a wide variety of fields and professions. The following profiles highlight several of our distinguished graduates. For their story, just click on their name.

 

Stephanie A. Burns, Ph.D. '77 is is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Dow Corning, a global leader in silicon-based technology, and was voted one of the 100 most powerful women in the world by Forbes

   
Patricia J. Scott, Ph.D. '97 is an associate professor and chair of the occupational therapy program at FIU. She is also a survivor who, in the face of failing health, learned that with enough certainty and determination she could adapt to whatever life had in store for her.
   
Chef and owner Rolando E. Cruz-Taura '93 is going back and forth from the main dining room of Fifty Restaurant & Lounge to the downstairs kitchen: It is a mid-January Friday afternoon and the restaurant, located at the end of the fourth block of South Beach’s Ocean Drive, is preparing for an influx of guests clamoring to taste one of the restaurant’s specialties.

Alumnus and McNair Scholar Haroldo Silva ’05 will spend much of his summer in an FIU laboratory continuing to unlock the mysteries of the cardiovascular system. At the end of July, he will take his research to a new level when he moves to California to begin the Ph.D. program at the University of California at Berkeley in the fall.

A study in educational tradition is best exemplified by the Flores family: Jordan Mullins-Flores, 20, is a sophomore currently attending FIU as an accounting major. Not too long ago, his sister Courtney L. Mullins-Flores '04 graduated with a degree in marketing and a minor in hospitality and tourism management, while their father Walter Flores received his degree in hospitality and tourism management in 1985.

Ana J. Colls ‘02 and William A. Ramos ‘85 both grew up in Miami, attended FIU and dedicated their careers to social services, but until April, their paths had never crossed.

Today, the two – who graduated from FIU 17 years apart -- are both national fellows in the prestigious National Urban Fellows (NUF) leadership development program. This is the first time in the program’s 36-year history that two FIU alumni are fellows in the same class.
   
Teresita Fernandez '90; FIU alumna Teresita Fernandez, a New York-based sculptor born and raised in Miami , is among the winners of this year's John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation grants.
   
Rosann M. Spiegel, '02, JD '05; Simply stated: “I wanted a new challenge.” This is how Rosann Spiegel, FIU's first law school graduate to pass the bar exam, describes her recent career move.
   
Gustavo A. de las Casas '00, MA '03; Alumnus Gustavo de las Casas has won a full doctoral fellowship to Columbia University's political science program, ranked No. 1 in the world.
   
Alberto J. Sabucedo, MS '95, Ph.D. '01; Last spring, a student approached FIU forensics and chemistry lecturer Alberto Sabucedo with a hunch about a so-called “dietary supplement” advertised as a 100 percent natural way to enhance male sexual performance.
   

Carlos A. Alvarez '74; The November election of Carlos Alvarez to the post of Miami-Dade County executive mayor put an FIU alumnus at the head of local government.

   

Dennis J. Lehane '01 wrote " Mystic River " which became a bestseller. It was a finalist for the PEN/Winship Award, and it won both the Anthony Award and the Barry Award for Best Novel, as well as the Massachusetts Book Award in fiction.

 

Nury M. Feria '76 is owner and president of interior design firm Design Perceptions, Inc., since 1978

   

Regynald G. Washington '74 is the driving force behind Disney’s ESPN Zone, a $100 million+ company specializing in food, beverage and interactive entertainment with a sports theme. further.

   

Adolfo Henriques '76 is chairman/CEO of Union Planters Bank-Florida. He is also the Chair of the FIU Board of Trustees.

   

Danny Pino '96 starred as Desi Arnaz in Lucy, a CBS television film about Lucille Ball. Arnaz, the Cuban-born musician, actor and husband of Ball, is best remembered for his role as Ricky Ricardo in the television series I Love Lucy.

   
Deborah Egurrola '99, MST '02 received the highest score in Florida on the May 2002 Uniform CPA Exam. Egurrola is one of only five candidates who earned the Gold Award from among a pool of more than 50,000 who sat for the examination last May.

Ileana C. Ros-Lehtinen '75, MS '87 was the first Hispanic woman elected to the Florida state legislature and the first Hispanic woman elected to U.S. Congress.

Melanie Green, named the 1998 Miami-Dade County Teacher of the Year, draws from her life experiences to motivate her students to reach their maximum potential.

Elizabeth R. Balmaseda '82, the recipient of two Pulitzer Prizes, reflects the kaleidoscopic Miami community in her writing.

James F. O'Brien '92, a professor at UC-Berkeley, has patents pending for his explosive computer animation techniques.

Allen B. Susser '78, one of the creators of "New World" cuisine, is renowned as one of the country's greatest chefs.

Gerald C. Grant, Jr. '78, MBA '89 is a vice president and district manager for AXA Advisors, LLC, one of the world's leading investment managers.

Bettina Rodriguez-Aguilera '79, honored as one of the nation's top 22 Hispanic leaders by the National Hispana Leadership Institute, has launched successful companies and established a non-profit organization to assist aspiring businesswomen.

Tayna V. Lawrence '98 became the first-ever FIU alumnus to win a medal in the Olympic games.

Michael A. Lowell '97, the Florida Marlins third baseman, is a success both on and off the field.

Marleine M. Bastien '86, MSW '87 is the founder and leader of Fanm Ayisyen Nan Miyami, Inc., a nonprofit advocacy group that works on
